Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

Roman Chamomile essential oil has been used as an herbal remedy since ancient times. The word “chamomile” is derived from the Greek words “khamai,” meaning on the ground, and “melon,” meaning apple—likely because of its distinct fruity aroma. Roman Chamomile is a low-growing plant with parsley-like leaves and daisy-like flowers. The flowers are steam distilled to create Roman Chamomile essential oil.

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

Roman-ChamomileRoman Chamomile Essential Oil (Chamaemelum nobile) has a warm, sweet, herbaceous scent that is relaxing and calming for both mind and body.

Roman Chamomile’s gentleness makes it especially valuable for restless children. For centuries, mothers have used chamomile to calm crying children, reduce fevers, eliminate earaches and soothe upset stomachs. It’s often called the “kid calmer” because of its ability to help children calm down naturally. Soothing to all types of skin, it is used extensively in Europe in skin preparations. This oil is also beneficial when added to massage oil for relief of muscle discomfort after exercise.

Roman Chamomile grows close to the ground, reaching only up to a foot in height. It has gray-green leaves, flowers that resemble a daisy, and smells like apple. The plant has been nicknamed the “plant’s physician” because it has positive effects on plants growing nearby. Ancient Romans used the oil for courage during the war.

While the most common use of chamomile is in teas, which is personally one of my favorite herbal teas, Roman Chamomile can also be found in face creams, drinks, hair dyes, shampoos, and perfumes. Roman Chamomile has a calming effect on the skin, mind, and body. It may even sooth several body systems.
